Engineered Oak Bi Folding Doors With Integral Blinds

This Oak Bi Folding Door System was installed to separate the living room from the conservatory. Due to the heat loss through the conservatory in the Winter months the Living room was never a comfortable temperature. The sun was also an issue as the glare onto the TV made viewing the television problematic. So the solution was a bi folding door system which could be shut during the colder months and open the rest of the year. The Integral Blind glass units meant the sun could be kept off the TV while still allowing light into the room.

The original door system was an old aluminium sliding door. The doors were difficult to open and did not prevent much heat loss during the winter months. The sliding doors were removed and new Engineered Oak Bi folds installed. Because the doors were being installed in a conservatory environment we knew they would be subjected to hot and cold periods and moisture could also be an issue. Engineered Oak was used because of the stability it offers compared to sawn timber. The doors were finished at 60mm thick to allow for the double glazed units incorporating the venetian blinds. A flush threshold was installed to reduce the tripping risk when the doors were fully opened.

The doors were made to fit neatly up to the newly plastered living room side leaving very little repair and redecoration, while the conservatory side was left ready to plasterboard and decorate.

63mm Engineered European Oak was used to manufacture the doors using traditional mortice and tenon joints. The frame was manufactured in European Oak also. The system uses Brio Weatherfold hardware with Brio’s locking mechanism on the folding pair. A Winkhaus thunderbolt multipoint was used on the access door giving several locking points when shut which was chosen for added security and to prevent the door warping in the heat.

The double glazed units incorporate Venetian Blinds inside the cavity which is the only viable solution for bi folding doors. The Blinds work like normal Venetian blinds and can be lifted or dropped to any height and the blades can be twisted to allow light in. These units used the cord mechanism which adheres to the glass and works by magnets. This increases the lifespan of the units because there are no wires or mechanisms breaching the seals of the units.
